North Wind is Blowin'
Aircraft Engineers preparing the engine to run it up and balance the Propeller before
Well it's been a few weeks since I have updated the blog. It has gone from -40 up to +5 and now back to 30 below. The cold isn't all that bad, regardless how cold it gets - it's the wind that makes it truly cold. Things have been rather slow up here; we've changed up our schedule allowing work on the ramp a seven day schedule rather than a Monday - Friday gig. Because of the coverage needed on a daily basis - everyone has a different set of two days off in the week, which is good - but when you are the only one in the company that needs to get up for work at 6 AM on Saturday, it sure looses its fun!
Last week I was responsible for receiving fuel; every few weeks we receive about 50,000L of Jet-A, which is trucked up from just outside of Edmonton, AB. After talking with the driver for a few hours he was telling me those truck drivers bring in some good money each month. He works 6 weeks on and has 3 weeks off after, working as much as he can in those 6 weeks. He told me that during the summer, the truckers haul fuel from Edmonton to Yellowknife to store in the Fuel Tank farm at the Yellowknife airport, which holds millions of litres. In the winter, the truckers then truck it up to the Diamond mines when the ice roads are open.
February is the beginning of Cariboo hunting season and our Turibine Otter has just been put onto skis. It took six of us to push out and took some serious maneuvering as it just barely fits inside: It's our cargo work-horse which has a 2000lb payload (meaning a lot of Cariboo!).
I spent sunday evening cleaning out the Cessna 185 after it returned back from its first Cariboo Hunting trip. The animal was all cut up already to maximize the aircrafts pay load, so they didn't have to bring unusable parts back. Frozen blood was everywhere, inside, outside, underneath, on the seats and under the seats - you name it, and it was there! It sure would have been a lot more fun cleaning up, if I had done the hunting myself!
At the end of next week, I will be heading South-East to do some flying. I'm sure looking forward to that!
